Adaptive Reuse at 225 W. Madison

Transforming a Vacant Jail into Class A office Building

This project won for Sustainability at the ACI National Level

Formerly the Madison Street Jail constructed in 1985, the 225 W. Madison project provided the opportunity to resurrect a decommissioned jail facility and repurpose through adaptive re-use as a class A office building. Maricopa County, the facility owner, chose not to demolish the structure which saved $10M in taxpayer money, in demolition costs. The 278,775 SF building completely transforms the jail into an open workspace. This was accomplished without compromising the structural integrity of the original cast-in-place concrete structure which also serves as the exterior skin. DLR Group provided planning, architecture, structural engineering, MEP engineering, interiors, and construction administration.

Bay State Grain Silos

Winner at AZ ACI Project for Innovation in Construction

The Bay State Milling company, a fifth-generation family-owned business, needed a set of new slipform grain silos for their Tolleson, AZ location, 24 of them, to be exact.  Each needed to rise 140 feet with a 21-foot diameter.  McCormick Construction, an industrial construction contractor based in Minnesota, was hired for the construction.  The creation of the silos was set to be a continuous pour spanning 9 straight days, 24 hours a day.  For this type of complex construction, the contractor used an intricate slip-forming process.

Presenters:  CalPortland and McCormick Construction.
