For over 20 years the concrete industry in North America have pursued to promote the use and benefits of performance requirements for concrete; but, the reality is that today’s concrete industry do not always recognize the performance of concrete to establish the design requirements and practices for optimizing the approach to construction. Overly prescriptive requirements create unnecessary limitations that affect the design constructability and affect the efficiency of construction operations to have a productive and optimized approach to the work. Use of performance requirements for concrete have been adopted in other countries, but still there are numerous challenges in the North American market. Mega projects with accelerated schedule and innovative design strategies provide a great opportunity to implement performance based approaches that allow for improve efficiency during construction. This presentation will discuss examples of mega projects in the United States that have been approached with the use of concrete performance and technical strategies to improve the work under accelerated schedule or emergency conditions.

Oscar R. Antommattei, MS, PE, FACI is the Chief Concrete Engineer and Materials Engineering Manager with Kiewit Corporation. He leads Kiewit’s engineering technical services for concrete—from design to production and construction. He started his engineering career over 22 years ago working with a concrete producer and general contractor. Prior to joining Kiewit in 2012, he also worked in design and forensic investigations with an engineering consultant. Oscar is a Fellow to the American Concrete Institute (ACI) where he serves as a member to the Board of Direction, Technical Activities Committee (TAC), ACI Foundation Concrete Innovation Council (CIC), and a variety of technical committees with interest in durability, constructability, mass concrete, hot weather, low carbon concrete and curing. He also serves in ASTM, ASCE, CSA, ASCC and TRB committees. In 2019 he was recognized as one of the Most Influential People in the Concrete Industry in the United States.
